This week Facebook is dealing with one of the biggest informational scandals 😱 in its history: community got aware of more than 50 mln of Facebook users who have had their private information harvested by different analytic companies. The leak became possible due to Facebook protocols, which were known to be not safe enough years before this leak. In the big picture, Facebook highest ranks were well aware of the possibility of users private information harvesting, so the leaks like this could be a usual practice.
Our interest here lies in the field of marketing. As we know, all the harvested data was used for especially rigorous advertising during the last US president elections . The thing is that nobody can prove that the marketing campaign, designed upon all the harvested data really reached its goal (mainly because of secrecy of voting), but the fact that Trumps office concluded number of sequential deals with Cambridge Analytica (known as the brain of the Donald J. Trump marketing campaign in Facebook), tells us that it was working, and was working well.
In either case, Facebook was not really good at safeguarding private user data, and today we can only guess what companies can possess this info. What kind of advertising campaigns are created nowadays upon the leaked data? The thing we know for sure is that marketing world now has an access to bigger and wider amount of Facebook users’ data than ever . And this data can be used to predict users’ behavior, and therefore to design more accurate advertising campaigns.
